Clippership Maritime Art
Steamer John Elder
Samuel Walters, Circa 1872
Oil on Canvas
The Steamship John Elder of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, by Samuel Walters. Identified by her funnel and company flag. The painting is unsigned, however a carte de visite photograph of the painting noting the name of the artist and ship exists in the collection of the Liverpool Central Library.
A possible study for this painting sold at Cuttlestones Auctioneers and Valuers, Penkridge, Staffordshire, UK, in September 2018 as "City of Brussels in a Heavy Swell." A photo of the painting from Mutualart.com is provided at the link. The house flag in the photo identifies the ship as belonging to the Pacific Steam Navigation Line. The painting is a small oil on board dated 1873. I would very much appreciate any information on this small painting if known. My contact information is listed above.
